Retinal Imaging

Retinal Imaging – See Your Eye Health In Close-Up

Our advanced retinal imaging technology allows us to photograph and analyse the back of your eye in extraordinary detail, detecting problems traditional examination methods might miss.

What is Retinal Imaging

Retinal imaging creates detailed digital photographs of the back of your eye, including the retina, the optic nerve, and blood vessels. No need for bright lights or drops to make your pupils dilate – our modern system captures crystal-clear images quickly and comfortably.

Included In Every Standard Eye Examination

At Insight Opticians, basic ultra-wide field retinal imaging comes as standard with every comprehensive eye examination. Many other practices charge extra, but we believe everyone deserves this level of care.

Advanced Tech

We use the Optos system. It’s the same calibre of equipment used by hospital eye specialists but conveniently located at your friendly high street practice. This remarkable technology captures 200 degrees of your retina in a single image, far more than traditional photography.

What Can Retinal Imaging Detect?

Our imaging helps detect and monitor numerous conditions, including:

  • Macular degeneration – age-related changes affecting central vision
  • Glaucoma – pressure-related damage to the optic nerve
  • Diabetic retinopathy – diabetes-related blood vessel changes
  • Retinal detachment – serious condition when the retina comes loose from its usual position
  • Choroidal naevi – retinal ‘birthmarks’ that need monitoring
  • General health indicators – high blood pressure, cholesterol issues

Enhanced OCT Imaging

For the most intricate analysis, we offer OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) imaging. This advanced scan creates cross-sectional images of your retina, showing layer-by-layer detail invisible to standard photography. OCT imaging can detect the earliest signs of macular degeneration and other problems years before symptoms appear.

Perfect For Any Age

While we usually recommend retinal imaging for patients over 30, it’s safe and beneficial for anyone. We’ve successfully used it to monitor retinal birthmarks in children as young as seven, bringing many a parent peace of mind.

Immediate Results And Expert Analysis

Unlike hospital appointments, where you might wait weeks for results, we discuss your retinal images immediately during your appointment. Our qualified optometrists explain exactly what the pictures show and what they mean for your eye health.

A Long-Term Picture Of Your Eye Health

We store your images securely so, next time you’re in, we can compare tests to help identify even tiny changes over time – often the key to early detection and successful treatment.

Simple And Comfortable

The imaging process takes just seconds per eye. There’s no direct contact, just a brief bright flash. Most patients find it much smoother than traditional eye examination methods.

Retinal imaging means you can rest easy knowing your eye health is in expert hands, thanks to the latest technology and skill of experienced professionals.
